Suitcase Secrets – Travel with Ease this Summer

Summer’s here!  It’s the time to plan for exciting travel for pleasure and sometimes a little business combo. As much as we look forward to being in new places, most people dread packing!  Having to decide what to take is mindboggling and lugging around the extra weight is exhausting; not to mention the baggage fees if you’re flying.  Also, if you’re traveling abroad, you can’t count on assistance, especially if trains are involved.

Packing with intention is the key to having everything you need in a carry on and one personal item on the plane. The airlines have become very strict about making sure you only board with two items. I’ve got this down to a fine art! My local clients appreciate my personal packing expertise and those residing out of state have benefited from a Zoom call.

When traveling for both business and pleasure, it’s important to pack efficiently and effectively. Here are ten packing guidelines to consider:

Plan your outfits: Take the time to plan your outfits in advance, considering both your business and leisure activities. Select versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down.
Stick to a color scheme: Choose a color scheme that allows you to mix and match your clothing items easily. This will help you pack fewer items while still having a variety of outfit options.
Pack essential basics: Include a blazer, a white shirt, a little black dress, and neutral-colored pants. These versatile pieces can be dressed up or down and are suitable for both business and leisure events.
Consider the weather: Check the weather forecast for your destination and your activities and pack the appropriate clothing.
Accessories Make a Difference: Accessories can transform an outfit and make it look different. Pack a few statement necklaces, scarves, or belts to add pizazz!  Also, they don’t take up much space.
Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics: Select clothing items made from wrinkle-resistant fabrics to minimize the need for ironing or steaming during your trip. This is especially important when traveling for business.
Pack travel-sized toiletries: To save space and comply with airline regulations, either buy or transfer your toiletries into travel-sized containers.
Use packing cubes or compression bags: Packing cubes or compression bags maximize the space in your suitcase and keep your belongings organized. They can help separate different types of items and reduce wrinkles.
Choose the best shoes: While packing pumps or low heels for business meetings, don’t forget to include comfortable shoes for leisure activities, like a leather sneaker.  Wear the pair that will take up the most space on the plane. I recently went to Europe with only two pairs of shoes!
Leave room for souvenirs: If you plan on purchasing souvenirs or shopping during your trip, leave some space in your suitcase.  Alternatively, consider packing a foldable tote bag for your return journey.

Remember to check any specific requirements or dress codes for your business engagements and consider the cultural norms of your destination. With careful planning and these packing guidelines, you can pack efficiently and be well-prepared for both business and pleasure during your trip.
