How to Be a Stylish Mom – 10 Must Haves for Busy Moms

On May 8th, we celebrate Mother’s Day. Those of you who are lucky enough to have moms who are living, give her the gift of your time and being with family. For those whose moms have passed, remember all the valuable lessons she taught you and the happy times together.

“It’s not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it.” Dorothy, The Golden Girls. Women don’t have much time to spend on being stylish when they become moms.  Motherhood is a demanding 24-7 lifetime commitment with different priorities, but we don’t want to look frumpy.  Even with all the mom duties and work, you can look attractive and chic with a few handy fashion tips.

10 Tips for busy moms to look fabulous!

An Easy Hairstyle – Your hair changes dramatically once you have children.  It’s usually messy because you don’t have time to style it anymore. I recommend consulting a stylist to create a flattering look that’s easy for you to maintain. If you want to keep your long hair Google some simple ways to wear it. If your hair is curly, you might consider a natural look. When you have the right cut, style, essentials, and accessories: hairbrush, headband, spin pins, and clips, you’ll have good hair days!

Fast Makeup Routine– Use multipurpose products, an overnight moisturizer, and all in one makeup brush. Next, apply a one-step foundation & concealer or a tinted moisturizer, followed by blush, mascara, and tinted lip gloss.

The Right Bra- Don’t ignore the telltale signs that you’re wearing the wrong bra size. Research has shown that most women are wearing the wrong bra size, which often leads to various problems.  I recommend getting a professional fitting to find the right supportive bra. Proper-fitting bras reduces premature breast sagging and the deep creases and bulges around the chest, making you feel more confident.

Shapewear- The right undergarments will give mom a flat tummy to look instantly younger. I can attest that the right foundations make a considerable difference in how your clothes look. One option is Spanx, a well-known product, but now there are many choices.

Create Your Uniform- The uniform dressing concept simplifies your life by taking the stress out of getting dressed. A uniform can take on any definition that suits you and typically means sticking with a similar color palette and proportions of tops and bottoms. Scan your closet and notice similarities in the pants and tops you reach for repeatedly. Finding the common denominators will help you discover what you love to wear. Now create a daily outfit with the styles you adore!

Practice the Rule of Three- For an outfit to go from good to great, it needs three key elements: the top, bottom (pants or skirt), and that extra something that finishes off the whole look. It can be a layering piece such as a jacket, blazer, cardigan, an accessory, or even an additional color. That completer piece pulls it all together for a stylish look!

Fitting Jeans-   Finding the right jeans for your body may take some time, but there are styles for every shape. For many, it’s a blessing that skinny jeans are on the way out.  The high-waist and wider bottom don’t require the same flat belly and tiny, high butt as other jeans. The slightly wider leg of a straight style can be more forgiving than the skinny style. The key to pulling off mom jeans is to either show or hide your waist by pairing them with the appropriate top: a cropped or a tucked in, or a long tunic, button down, or oversized sweater.

Coat/Jacket- A jacket or coat immediately up levels any outfit.  There are tons of options to keep you warm, stylish, and comfortable. Consider one with a hood for every day to free your hands.  The best news is it can cover your outfit! Real estate mongrel Barbara Cochran realized the importance of owning the right coat when she spent her first commission on one at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC.

Comfortable Feet- The slip-on, such as the ballet flat or loafer, is excellent for moms on the go. These shoes are comfortable, stylish, and, most importantly, easy to put on and fit many settings: the playground, lunch/dinner out with friends, or running errands. Also, sneakers are ideal and now come in many varieties from canvas to leather, low to high top, and even with bling! Select the perfect shoe to be part of your uniform.

The Perfect Handbag-  There’s a style that fits the needs of every mom and neatly holds all the essentials from crossbody bags to stylish totes. Handbags are also made from various materials such as leather, straw, fabric, vinyl, etc.  Selecting a neutral color such as black or nude, with or without a logo in a size that’s proportional with your body, is always a good investment.

Being a mom is a 24-7 job with an endless to-do list, leaving little time for getting dressed. A closet stocked with the core basics of easy machine washable pieces in your color palette is key to getting ready quickly and simplifying your life.  What tips are you already using to be a cool, stylish mom?
