Fall is here, and for many, it’s the best time of year with pumpkin-spiced everything, cool temperatures, football, and warmer clothes. The temperatures are generally warm in September and begin to cool off in October, especially in the mornings and evenings. Yet, we love to extend summer with the longer days perfect for fun outside activities and vacations. We also tend to cling to short, lightweight, and comfy clothes. Dealing with the temperature changes throughout the day is challenging, along with transitioning from sundresses to coats.
Here are 10 ways to shift from summer to fall.
Layers- Layering is the easiest way to give your outfit a fall look and keep you warm in the cold mornings. Just add a cardigan or a jacket and shed them as the temperatures rise. Be creative and wear a long sleeve shirt or turtleneck under a dress. Also, the sweater vest is popular this season.
Darker Colors- As the foliage changes colors, so do our wardrobes. Begin introducing darker colors such as eggplant, oxblood red, olive green, and muted orange into your outfits. Pair your white jeans with a dark red sweater rather than a floral blouse.
Boots- The versatility and wearability of boots make them a Fall essential. From booties to thigh high, boots look great with many styles ranging from dresses to jeans.
Bags- Match your fall outfit with a great bag for a put-together look. A cross-over bag in a neutral color is versatile for every day.
Belts- A good belt brings life and personality to an outfit. Your options are endless because you can belt almost anything: jackets, dresses, and sweaters.
Hosiery- Textured hose or tights are another option to add fun, texture, and warmth to shift a dress into fall. If you’re not into tights, try leggings.
Statement jacket- Purchase one statement jacket that stands out and goes with all of your summer clothes as you transition into fall. Purchasing just one statement piece can take the place of splurging on several lower-cost pieces. A jacket or blazer stretches your wardrobe by allowing you to create new combinations that look put together and polished.
Consider any one of the following:
- A military-style cargo jacket with a waist that cinches is perfect for skinny jeans and flat booties.
- A leather jacket with moto styling looks great with summer dresses and boots.
- A well-cut blazer is a prudent investment to toss over your light summer tops or dresses for a night on the town.
- A classic trench coat in a darker neutral is the classic workhorse that goes with everything and fends off inclement weather.
Length- Swap your sleeveless tops to ¾ or long sleeves and your hemlines from short to maxi.
Scarf- Adding a scarf creates interesting looks with so many ways to tie and wear them.
Hats- Topping off your outfit with a felt hat sets you apart from the rest. Choose your favorite fall color for pizazz!
The turning leaves don’t signal the need to buy a completely new wardrobe. Your summer clothes get to stick around for another season by adding darker colors, richer textures, and a little added warmth. You save money to invest later on functional winter clothes.
