My Mother Said- Fashion Advice from Mom

I’m writing this blog as a tribute to my mom, Virginia Linsey, who passed away on March 4th and now looks down on me from Heaven. My mom was a photographic fashion model in New York City in the late 1940’s. She taught me so much and had a major impact on my style that is still evident today.

I remember her first words of advice as a young girl, “Always change your underwear daily.” Of course, you never knew if you would have to see a doctor or go to the emergency room! Now I interpret that advice to always wear good under garments because they lay the foundation for all your outfits. Make sure that the panties don’t show any unattractive lines through your clothes, and that your bras actually lift those girls! Most premium department stores will gladly do a complimentary bra fitting. Properly fitting undergarments are worth the investment since they enhance your overall appearance in any outfit!

My mom’s words that still resound in my mind are to always look your best. Taking pride in your appearance reflects on your self- esteem. To ensure that I looked my best growing up, I had three separate wardrobes: for play, school and church. My play outfits consisted of dungarees without holes, a tee shirt and Keds sneakers. I wore dresses and skirts to school with sweater sets and leather shoes; pants were not allowed back then. My church clothes consisted of pretty dresses and patent leather shoes. Holes and rips were frowned upon.

I just realized that my current wardrobe follows these guidelines with workout clothes – very casual with athletic shoes; business casual and business attire with pumps; and party/night life outfits with heels or sparkly sandals. This allows me to dress appropriately for any occasion, which again follows mom’s advice.

Another fashion nugget from my mom is to only invest in classic pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways. Trends come and go, while classic pieces are timeless. Also, if the style or color doesn’t flatter you don’t buy it; “when in doubt leave it out. “

Mom would remind me to always make my best first impression.  Mom’s influence is evident in my ImageUp consulting business. My clients love their unique, yet classic style created just for them. Their new polished look boosts confidence which makes them even more unstoppable!  If you’d like a sharper appearance with an updated hairdo and makeup along with a wardrobe that flatters your body shape, ImageUp is ready to make it happen!

May you appreciate all the influence your mother had on your life on this Mother’s Day.
