Headshots That Hit the Mark- 5 Secrets for Selecting the Perfect Look for Your Photo Shoot

Your headshot represents your business and reassures potential customers seeking information about your services that a real person exists. First impressions are made instantly and are crucial to create a positive business image, especially on social media sites.  Consider your business, your personality, and the audience that you want to attract; then dress accordingly. Keep in mind there isn’t a strict rule for ‘what to wear’, as long as your outfit reflects your company. For instance, if you’re in the legal profession a suit will set a more professional tone. On the other hand, if your field is in the creative realm more casual attire may be more appropriate.  Of course, everyone wants to project their best self and send a positive message to their target audience.

What does a business woman wear to a photo session? This is an important question to consider before heading to the studio. It’s exactly the one I asked my photographer, who suggested bringing multiple outfits.  Since I just updated my headshots, I faced the dilemma of what to wear. Now I’m ready to share my experience and offer five secrets to selecting your perfect look.

COLOR– Ask your photographer about the colors of the backdrops before selecting your outfit to avoid blending in or severe contrasts. Stark white or black are normally not good choices since they may play havoc with the camera’s exposure or the backdrop. Also, black is considered somber and safe, probably not the vibe you want to project. Solid colors are always best, especially jewel tones.  Patterns and prints are often distracting and can date the photo. Mid-tones in blue, green, wine, and purple are universally flattering. To accentuate your face avoid wearing flesh tone, cream, or pastel tops that blend your face into your clothes—after all it’s a head shot! Finally, select your best color; one that makes your eyes and smile sparkle!

UNDERGARMENTS – A good foundation is essential to creating a great outfit, even for a headshot.  A proper fitting bra with full coverage is highly recommended. You may want to bring several to ensure that your straps remain under cover!

A GOOD FIT– Clothes that fit properly are a must! Ill fitting clothes, either too large or too small, add pounds to your appearance! Your shape is totally lost in baggy attire; a little snug is actually better than loose. Even in a headshot, the wrong fit makes a difference to the look of your shoulders and neckline.

THE NECKLINE- Simple necklines draw attention to your face making them perfect for headshots. A modest V neck is universally flattering because it elongates the neck. Turtle necks are a no go. A crisp blouse in your best color with sleeves and a stand up collar that frames your face works well. Also, fine gauge knits and lace introduce texture and add interest. Jackets pair best with a collarless top such as a shell or scoop in a contrasting color to keep the neckline simple and sleek. Again, the emphasis is on your face.

ACCESSORIES- Keep jewelry to a minimum; actually less is more; that is unless it’s your signature look or you’re represent a jewelry line. Simple pearl, diamonds, or gem stone studs are best. Hoops and dangling earrings can be distracting and interfere with your hair. Large statement pieces draw attention away from you, defeating the purpose of the headshot. However, if you always wear a certain piece of jewelry or big jewelry is part of your signature look, bring it to the session. If you wear glasses but won’t be wearing them for the photo remove them at least a half hour before to avoid the little red marks on either side of your nose. Just remember the focus is on your face. Most of all, relax and smile!
