Our vision of eyeglasses has transformed from nerd necessity to a chic fashion accessory! Also, glasses have become a symbol of grown-up sophistication embraced by famous fashion designers: Gucci, Dior, Prada, etc. Glasses are now a fashion piece worn by models in magazines and runways, as well as celebs! I recall how beautiful Meryl Steep looked with her eyes framed on Oscar night!

I have vivid memories of my first eye exam and the announcement that I needed glasses. I was less than thrilled at being perceived as that geeky, boring girl by my high school peers. Thank goodness, frames and our frame of mind have come a long way! I now have a collection of fun readers that complement my outfits, and I actually receive compliments on my glasses! They have become a fashion accessory that I change just like my shoes and earrings. Sunglasses are my favorite fun look!

Let’s change lenses for a minute and focus on today’s perception. Research conducted by the College of Optometrist reported that 45% of the participants agreed that glasses made them appear smart; while another 35% decided on glasses created a professional business-like appearance. It’s no wonder that people of all ages are turning to wear glasses as part of their signature style to be perceived as more intelligent, professional, and business-like. Some are donning glasses even though they are not medically needed.

The selection and styles of frames have grown tremendously: retro, vintage, tortoiseshell, and geometric shapes, etc. that attract rather than deflect attention. So, how do you choose a style that is the right one for you? First, let’s consider the shape of your face. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Oval –bold styles are making sure the glasses are wider than the broadest part of your face.
  2. Square- rounder frames will soften your features.
  3. Round- angular, narrow frames will help lengthen your face.

Other considerations for selecting the right frame for you include your coloring and personality. Ladies, choose a feminine, clean frame with lovely, refined details without being too fussy.  Remember glasses are now a fun accessory that can add to your look, can emphasize certain elements of your outfit, and most importantly can become part of your signature style!
