CONQUERING THE CLOSET CHAOS! 10 Creative Organizational Ideas

Spring is the time for cleaning, clearing out the clutter, especially in the closets and making room for a fresh start!  Many of us don’t have the space to store our entire wardrobe; switching the seasons is part of getting ready for the warmer weather. How and where do you store your clothes that are out of season? Mine are packed in slim plastic containers that slide under the bed.

My husband and I are getting ready to move into a new home, where all his needs will be on the first floor. The only dilemma is the smaller size of the master closet. The current owners have a large armoire in there; I’m not sure how to maximize the space. I have been researching ways to get the most out of the allotted space. Here are 10 ideas that I explored:

1 – Purging the closet was the first step. Everything was removed. Trying on each garment and checking in the mirror for the fit and if the style flatters my body type was exhausting!  As I examined each garment, I asked myself would I buy it today? Also, I thought about how well it coordinated with my other pieces and how often I wore it. Next came the decision about the castoffs. Piles were made for charity donations and consignment. Recently, I’ve used POSHMARK to sell some of my things.
2 – Select matching hangers to create a unified, streamlined look and eliminate visual chaos. I invested in the sturdy, slim covered hangers that saved space and worked well with my wardrobe. They were perfect for hanging heavy blazers as well as slippery silk blouses.
3 – Hanging scarves on non-slip hangers not only let me find them quickly, but also kept them from wrinkling. Another idea that worked was using a towel bar to organize them.
4 – I hung all my clothes in the same direction by category and color coordinate to make getting dressed easy. All the shell or sleeveless tops were grouped together and ranged from light to dark colors. Next came the short sleeve and then long sleeve blouses arranged in the same manner.  The same procedure was used for each category of clothing.
5 – I added a second level with a rod to double up the number of clothes stored in the closet. Now blouses were on the top with slacks below. Only dresses and longer garments were on a single rod for additional length so they wouldn’t drag on the floor. Also, I utilized the space above the closet door to store light weight items.
6 – My shoe collection was the next problem to solve. In my current home there was a canvas organizer with compartments on the back of the door with the shoes I wore most often, Also, there was a set of stacked shelves on the floor along the back wall. More pairs will fit on the shelf or in cubbies when each shoe is placed facing the opposite direction.  The overflow was still in the boxes, some clear and others labeled.  I really like the stackable clear shoe boxes that open in the front; I’m still considering the investment. I really love the Elfa shelving that was left by the pervious owner!  Using pool noodles to insert in my boots was a clever and cheap idea for them to stand up and keep their shape.
7 – My passion for fun jewelry was very evident because it was everywhere- in drawers, small armoire, in cases and hangers behind doors! The dilemma still exists on how to store and display it all so it’s handy to wear!  I’ve checked the Container Store and think that the mounted tie rack will work for my longer hanging pieces. I’m also considering an inexpensive pegboard with hooks that I can place anywhere! The metal paper towel holder was perfect to stack bracelets and bangles. I’ll keep you updated on social media.
8 – My wraps, shawls, and workout clothes were folded and stored in canvas containers on the top shelf. These gave a neat, clean appearance.
9 – Right now, my handbags, purses and totes are arranged neatly on shelves. I wasn’t sure how they will be stored in the new place until. . . I discovered a new gate in the backyard that wasn’t heavy and had 16 prongs that my husband mounted in the closet. It was perfect for hanging all shoulder bags!! I’m considering clear magazine organizers to stand up the slim clutches. Other types of organizers may include hat boxes, baskets, desk accessories (the larger ones meant for files), and other bags; those very large totes meant for the beach or shopping can also serve as storage for smaller purses.
10 –  A special hanger with hooks worked well for belts for easy access. Also, shower curtain hooks are ideal, too. Another idea is using command hooks to hang individually along the wall.
