Summer is here, and travel plans are in the works! We are tired of being restricted and are now ready to spread our wings to explore new places. Traveling with just a carry-on can be challenging and requires some planning, but you’ll be glad that you can just get off the plane and go without worrying about lost luggage.
I personally just returned from a week-long adventure trip to Peru. It was the fulfillment of a dream to see Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. I must fess up; there were a few pieces I could have deleted, mainly the dressier items. However, I didn’t overpack and still had room for some purchases. I even surprised myself with a backpack with essentials for 2 days that weighed less than the 11 lbs. limit for the train! It’s easy to travel in style; with a little planning, you can look put together and be comfortable.
There are a few tips before you start putting things in your suitcase.
- Check the weather forecast for your destination.
- Check with your accommodation to see what amenities and toiletries are included.
- Remember the 3-1-1 rule- one, 1-quart bag with liquids no more than 3.4 ounces.
- Make a packing list and layout everything.
- Wear heavy items on the plane such as hiking boots or a heavy coat.
Here are my recommendations for packing light with everything you need for a fun vacation. Of course, this list may need modification depending on your destination.
- 3 bottoms
- 5 tops
- 1 dressy option (mix and match with accessories and outerwear)
- 1 sweater or jacket
- 2-3 pairs of shoes- one for walking such as sneakers and a dressier option, flip flops for the beach or pool
- 1 hat
- 1 bathing suit/ cover-up
- Sleepwear and underwear (wash and dry overnight)
- Accessories (scarves, jewelry)
- Prescriptions, first aid items, sunscreen, bug repellant etc.
